An armed carjacking suspect from Arlington County was taken into custody late Tuesday night after a U.S. Park Police pursuit ended with an SUV rolling over in southeast Washington, authorities say. The vehicle flipped after slamming into another car with someone inside and then a parked, unoccupied vehicle. Medics took people from both cars to nearby hospitals to be checked out, and officers arrested the driver at the scene.
According to WJLA, Prince George's County officers first spotted the SUV on St. Barnabas Road around 11 p.m. U.S. Park Police then tried to pull it over near Suitland Parkway and Silver Hill Road, but the driver allegedly hit the gas instead of the brakes. During the chase, the SUV struck an occupied vehicle, hit an empty parked car and ultimately overturned near Branch Avenue and Lyndale Place SE. Investigators say the driver had multiple outstanding warrants, and officers recovered a shotgun from inside the SUV.
Linked To Cherrydale Armed Carjacking
Local reports tie that SUV to an armed carjacking in Arlington's Cherrydale neighborhood earlier Tuesday afternoon. In that case, a suspect allegedly brandished a rifle and took an SUV in the residential area. Officers swarmed the neighborhood shortly after the midday incident, according to ARLnow.
Hospital Checks And Ongoing Investigation
Both the suspect and the person in the other vehicle involved in the crash were taken to hospitals for evaluation. U.S. Park Police say the investigation remains active as they sort through potential charges and coordinate with local jurisdictions. The suspect's name has not been released, and authorities are asking anyone with information about the case to contact investigators.
