Austin is waking up under mostly cloudy skies, but the forecast is about to turn brutally bright and hot. Temperatures near 77 degrees early Friday will climb to around 101 by late afternoon, with the heat index making it feel closer to 108.
Friday should stay mostly sunny and dry once the morning clouds break, with light south winds and virtually no rain chance. The National Weather Service says the heat will be strongest along the I-35 corridor, where afternoon conditions could pose health risks without enough water, shade and cooling.
Saturday Offers A Brief Storm Opening
Saturday brings another near-triple-digit day, with a high around 100 and heat-index values as high as 109. A weak front could trigger a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1 p.m., with storm chances lingering into Saturday evening.
Most Austin locations may see little rain, but a few storms could produce brief heavy downpours before moving out. The National Weather Service expects the front to bring somewhat drier air behind it, though temperatures will barely budge.
Heat Stays In Charge Next Week
Sunday is forecast to be sunny with a high near 101, followed by 102 on Monday, 101 on Tuesday and 100 on Wednesday. Thursday should still reach about 99, while overnight lows remain close to 78 degrees and offer limited relief.
No watches or warnings are in effect, but this is still a week to treat afternoon heat seriously. Move strenuous outdoor work toward the morning or evening, drink water regularly, and check on older adults, neighbors, children and pets during the hottest part of the day.
