Somewhere in Austin, someone is sitting on a slip of paper worth $1 million, and the clock is almost out. A Powerball ticket that matched all five white-ball numbers in the February 2 drawing has never been claimed and is set to expire on August 1 unless the winner steps forward.
Because August 1 falls on a weekend, the Texas Lottery says anyone planning to claim the prize in person has to do it by 5 p.m. local time on July 31.
The numbers and the prize
The official Powerball results for February 2 list the white numbers 3, 8, 31, 60 and 65, and the red Powerball 4. According to Powerball, the drawing produced no jackpot winners. One Texas ticket matched all five white balls to land the $1 million Match-5 prize, and another Match-5 winner was sold in Louisiana.
How to claim
As reported by WOAI, the Texas Lottery warns the unclaimed $1 million prize will expire on August 1, and in-person claims must be completed by 5 p.m. local time on July 31. Officials also encourage players to check the Texas Lottery website for up-to-date claim-center hours before heading out.
Where the ticket was sold
The Texas Lottery’s winner details list the $1 million ticket as sold at CIRCLE K #2704686, 6107 W. Parmer Ln. in northwest Austin, and note the prize level as Match-5 ($1,000,000), according to Texas Lottery. The site also reminds players that draw-game tickets have to be claimed within 180 days of the draw date.
Where unclaimed money goes
If the prize is never claimed, the money does not roll over to another player. Instead, the funds are turned over to state accounts and used for programs authorized by the Legislature, most notably the Foundation School Fund for public education, according to reporting from the Texas Comptroller.
If you think you might be holding the winning ticket, sign the back of it, keep it in a safe place, and either take it to a Texas Lottery claim center or mail it so that it is postmarked by the expiration date. For claim-center locations, current hours and mailing instructions, see Texas Lottery.
