
Handwritten notes in Austin’s air traffic control tower just got downgraded to nostalgia. On Tuesday, Austin-Bergstrom International Airport switched on the FAA’s Terminal Flight Data Manager, a touchscreen system that replaces the traditional handwritten paper flight strips in the tower. Tasks controllers used to scribble on paper now live on a shared digital display that is meant to speed gate-to-runway sequencing and cut down on taxi time. Airport officials say passengers will still see mostly familiar boarding and gate routines, while tower crews quietly swap pens for touchscreens.
Austin is the 18th U.S. airport to roll out the Terminal Flight Data Manager, and the FAA’s acting air-traffic systems director told local reporters that roughly 55,000 paper “flight strips” are printed across the system each day. As reported by FOX 7 Austin, Amee Patel said controllers at previous TFDM sites "don't want to go back," and a Leidos manager told the station that the electronic strips display real-time flight data on each controller’s touchscreen workstation. The change is a visible step in what the FAA has billed as the largest transformation of U.S. air-traffic control in decades.
Who Built the System
The TFDM software was developed for the FAA by Leidos, which says the platform pairs electronic flight strips with an integrated surface display so controllers, air-traffic managers and airline operations teams share a single, live picture of activity on the field. In a company release, Leidos described recent rollouts and said TFDM is designed to reduce runway departure queues and improve coordination.
Why the Change Matters
The FAA frames TFDM as a core NextGen surface-management tool and says the program will be implemented at dozens of towers as part of a larger modernization plan. According to the FAA, TFDM is expected to improve predictability and collaboration across the gate-to-runway sequence, with deployment plans that aim for roughly 89 sites in the coming years. The upgrade is part of a broader federal modernization push, and Congress provided about $12.5 billion toward air-traffic control upgrades that fund radar, communications and other infrastructure work, per Congress.gov.
What Travelers Should Know
Officials say travelers are unlikely to notice immediate changes at ticket counters or gates, even as airports and airlines gain a more accurate, shared picture of arrivals and departures. Industry reporting on earlier rollouts shows controllers needed time to adjust and that brief, localized delays can occur while staff learn new workflows, according to Federal News Network. FAA and Leidos representatives stress that fallback procedures exist and that paper strips can still be used if networks or power fail, the airport told local reporters in coverage by FOX 7 Austin.
AUS leaders say TFDM is one part of the airport's larger "Journey With AUS" expansion and modernization program, which the airport outlines on its website. For travelers, the system promises somewhat less idling on the tarmac and more predictable operations, while for the FAA it is a highly visible step toward a more fully digital national airspace system.
