A 5‑month‑old infant died Tuesday after a pickup truck parked in a Tumwater driveway burst into flames, triggering a desperate scramble by family members and neighbors who tried to pull the children to safety. Despite those efforts and a rapid response from first responders, the baby did not survive.
According to KIRO 7 News, three siblings, ages 12, 2 and 5 months, were sitting in the running truck while their father briefly went back inside the house. The 12‑year‑old managed to get the 2‑year‑old out and ran to alert their father, but by the time adults rushed back outside, the vehicle was fully engulfed. Several people suffered burns while trying to reach the infant and were taken for medical evaluation, officials said.

As reported by MyNorthwest, detectives with the Thurston County Sheriff's Office are working alongside local fire investigators and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to determine how the truck ignited. Thurston County Sheriff Derek Sanders offered condolences to the family, saying, "Our thoughts are with the family, loved ones, and all those affected by this tragic loss." Investigators said additional information will be released as the probe continues.
