A 40-year-old South Euclid man wanted in an arson investigation is now in custody after a brief backyard foot chase in Cleveland Heights that capped a two-day effort by multiple police agencies. Officers had tried to stop his car earlier but backed off over safety concerns, later tracked down the vehicle, and say the suspect took off running before they finally caught up with him. Prosecutors have since tacked on fleeing and eluding and obstructing official business charges, and investigators report finding a handgun near a nearby home.
The first attempt to stop the man happened July 15 on South Belvoir Boulevard, when officers tried to pull over his vehicle but decided not to pursue because of public-safety concerns, according to Cleveland.com. Police spotted the same car again the next day, July 16, on Mayfield Road and moved in for another traffic stop. After the vehicle came to a halt, the driver allegedly bolted on foot and was taken into custody in a resident's backyard on Rosemond Road. Prosecutors later filed new counts of fleeing and eluding and obstructing official business connected to the arrest, the outlet reports.

Investigators say they recovered a handgun behind a home on Ardmore Road that they believe the suspect tossed during the chase, and that he was arrested on a warrant issued the previous day, according to Cleveland.com. The man remains in custody while prosecutors review the case, and court dates were not yet listed in public records. Officials have not released any additional information about the underlying arson investigation.
