The Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians is making a bold play off the casino floor, handing the reins of its Four Winds Ventures operation to veteran hospitality executive Kathy George as chief executive officer. George will steer the tribe’s commercial gaming and hospitality investing arm as it chases management and development deals beyond the Pokagon Band’s existing Four Winds casino properties, a clear signal that the tribe wants Four Winds to stand on its own as a broader business brand.

Her appointment, reported on Monday by Crain’s Grand Rapids Business, puts George in charge of Four Winds Ventures’ investment, consulting and operating efforts in gaming, hotels, food and beverage, and related sectors. A July 7 announcement from Four Winds Ventures laid out the mandate for the new role as the company positions itself to manage and develop projects beyond the tribe’s current casino footprint.

George brings more than thirty years of hotel and casino leadership to the job. Most recently, she served as president of Catawba Two Kings Casino in North Carolina and earlier as CEO of FireKeepers Casino Hotel in Battle Creek. Her résumé also includes general manager duties at Seneca Niagara and senior posts with hotel brands such as DoubleTree, Embassy Suites, and Wyndham. Indian Gaming highlights her deep tribal gaming background and past recognition on industry lists of influential executives.

“She is one of the most respected leaders in the gaming and hospitality industry, with an exceptional track record of operational excellence, strategic vision, and developing strong teams,” Matthew Wesaw, chairman of the Pokagon Band, said in the company announcement. Mary Smith, chair of the Four Winds Ventures board and president and CEO of Four Winds Casinos, added that George’s experience makes her “the ideal person to guide Four Winds Ventures into its next phase of development,” the Four Winds Ventures release said. The company noted that George will work closely with the board to pursue deals that broaden the Pokagon Band’s economic footprint.

Four Winds Footprint in Southwest Michigan

Four Winds Casinos already has a sizable presence on the regional map, with locations in New Buffalo, Hartford, and Dowagiac, Michigan, plus a property in South Bend just over the Indiana state line. The brand functions as a major employer and entertainment draw in southwest Michigan and northern Indiana. The New Buffalo resort, the flagship of the portfolio, opened in 2007 and remains the largest of the group’s properties. What Four Winds Ventures Will Aim To Do

Created in early 2025 by the Pokagon Band, Four Winds Ventures is designed to hunt for investments, consulting assignments and management opportunities in commercial gaming and hospitality. Rather than operating the existing casinos, it serves as a standalone vehicle to diversify tribal revenue and to advise or manage third-party projects. InterGame has reported on the new entity’s formation and its focus on growing the Four Winds name beyond traditional tribal casino operations.

“I am very excited to join Four Winds Ventures and support the long-term goals of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi,” George said in the announcement, adding that she intends to work closely with the board to identify and pursue new opportunities. The hire places a seasoned tribal gaming operator at the center of the Pokagon Band’s push to expand and professionalize its commercial portfolio across the Midwest, Indian Gaming reported in its coverage of her appointment.
