What started as a routine on Tuesday afternoon in Bay City turned serious in an instant when a 7-year-old child was hit by a vehicle at a downtown intersection and rushed to the hospital in critical condition, police said. Another child who was with them escaped with only minor injuries.

Bay City Department of Public Safety crews were called around 3:15 p.m. to the intersection of Center Avenue (M-25) and North Monroe Street after a report of a child struck by a vehicle, according to WNEM. The 7-year-old was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition, and an 11-year-old who had been with the child suffered minor injuries. Authorities said two vehicles were involved in the incident.

Officers shut down two blocks of Center Avenue while they processed the scene, routing traffic onto side streets and around the downtown corridor. Investigators have not released the names of the children or the drivers as the investigation continues, according to the Huron Daily Tribune.
