Houston Heights has a new bar where the décor pitch is less polished cocktail lounge and more “your grandmother’s house” — except the drinks are boozy and the molasses is classy. Beez Kneez, an Austin-born cocktail concept, officially opened its first Houston location last Monday, giving West 19th another late-night stop with a deliberately lived-in personality.
The bar is at 1015 W. 19th St. and welcomed the neighborhood with a friends-and-family soft opening before its official debut, according to Community Impact. The business describes the space as “Grandma’s House in the heart of the Heights,” with adult beverages, treats and bar food on offer. Among the menu’s named draws are “Classy Molassy” cocktails, because apparently even Grandma has a signature pour now.
Beez Kneez is based in Austin and is part of Bear Hug Hospitality’s expansion into Houston, What Now Houston reported when the project was first announced in 2023. The group pitched the Houston outpost as an extension of the original bar rather than a totally new concept, carrying over the relaxed, speakeasy-style vibe and the Granny’s House identity. That makes it a transplant with a very specific costume: vintage living room, late-night cocktails.
A New Cocktail Room On A Busy Heights Block
The opening lands on a stretch of West 19th that is becoming increasingly bar-heavy. State project records show the Beez Kneez buildout was registered as a new 3,892-square-foot commercial bar and tavern, with an estimated $880,000 project cost, according to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. The records identify Willie Stark as the project contact and list 1015 West 19th LLC as the property owner.
What To Expect
Beez Kneez joins a recent run of concept-driven cocktail openings in the neighborhood, including Dallas-born Atlas, which opened nearby on West 19th earlier this month, Hoodline reported. The new bar’s pitch is less formal tasting menu and more nostalgic hangout: drinks, snacks, playful décor and a place to settle in with friends. Doors opened at 8 p.m. for the Houston debut, putting Beez Kneez squarely into the Heights’ evening bar circuit.
For Heights regulars, the appeal is straightforward: a new neighborhood bar with an Austin pedigree, a theatrical theme and cocktails that arrive with more personality than a standard well drink. In a neighborhood where bar openings have become their own kind of local event, Beez Kneez is betting that nostalgia — with a little booze in it — can bring people through the door.
