The Belly of the Whale, a new seafood concept, is steering into Charlotte's Cotswold neighborhood and taking over a Colwick Road storefront that has sat dark since late 2025. The operator is planning a larger, single dining room that should stand out on a corridor better known for smaller counters and familiar chains, and longtime neighbors who remember the pizzeria that once held the space can expect a very different menu and mood when doors finally open.
According to Charlotte Business Journal, Belly of the Whale is set to take roughly 2,700 square feet and bills itself as "intimate and refined." The Business Journal's July 2 report identified the address as the former Pizza Peel location and offered the first public confirmation that the seafood concept is headed for that stretch of Colwick Road, though it stopped short of revealing a full menu or firm opening date.
The Pizza Peel announced in early November 2025 on social media that it would close its Colwick Road location, and WBTV reported the pizzeria's final day of service as Nov. 16, 2025, wrapping up about a 17-year run in the neighborhood. That exit left behind a sizable, contiguous space that now appears to have lured a full-service seafood player. If build-out proceeds as planned, the incoming tenant would be among the first to pursue a complete overhaul of that particular unit.
Cotswold's Dining Shuffle Picks Up Steam
The Charlotte Observer has documented a wave of recent closures and quick-turn leases in and around Cotswold, a shake-up that has pushed several once-stable restaurants back onto the market. Those moves have given landlords a fresh chance to pitch bigger footprints to sit-down, destination-oriented operators instead of smaller counter-service outfits. In that context, a 2,700-square-foot seafood restaurant like Belly of the Whale would mark a noticeable new anchor on Colwick Road.
What Still Is Not on the Table
Neither the Business Journal report nor public listings spell out a target opening date, so the timeline for Belly of the Whale's debut remains up in the air. This story will be updated as the operator or property managers release details on the menu, hiring, or grand-opening plans.
