Twenty people were taken into custody in a two-day, multi-agency law enforcement sweep across Bemidji and nearby communities this week. The operation ran July 22 to 23 and targeted individuals wanted in connection with firearms violations, shootings and narcotics offenses. Authorities say those arrested are being held pending formal charges.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension’s Violent Crime Reduction Unit led the effort with local and federal partners, including the Paul Bunyan Drug Task Force, Bemidji Police, Leech Lake and Red Lake tribal police, the Hubbard, Cass and Beltrami County sheriff’s offices, the FBI’s Headwaters Safe Trails Task Force and the BCA’s Bemidji regional office, according to KFGO. Officials said some people were arrested on outstanding warrants while others were taken into custody after local investigations. Law enforcement have not released the identities of those arrested while prosecutors review the cases.
Seizures and booking locations
Investigators recovered four illegal firearms, a gun silencer, ammunition and small amounts of illicit narcotics during the operation. Authorities say all those arrested were booked into the Cass County Jail, Hubbard County Jail or the Red Lake Detention Center while formal charges are prepared, per WJON. Officers described the sweep as focused on removing weapons and drugs linked to violent incidents around Bemidji.
Part of a statewide violent-crime push
The sweep fits a broader BCA strategy. according to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety. That three-pronged approach — arresting repeat violent offenders, confiscating firearms and taking drugs off the street — has been central to the unit’s work around the state. Officials contend the model lets them pursue suspects who move across jurisdictional lines.
Local agencies have worked together on similar actions before. County records show the Paul Bunyan Drug Task Force has made sizable narcotics and firearm seizures in recent years as part of those coordinated efforts. The multi-county operation underscores how northern Minnesota jurisdictions pool resources to pursue suspects who operate across county borders. Prosecutors in Cass, Hubbard and Beltrami counties will determine whether to file charges as detectives finish compiling evidence, per Minnesota News Network.
Law enforcement said the BCA will continue partnering with local agencies on similar targeted operations around the state, and asked anyone with information about related crimes to contact their local police or sheriff’s office.
