Security camera footage released this week by Bloomfield Township police shows eight people storming into the Bloomfield Town Square DICK'S Sporting Goods, grabbing armfuls and bagfuls of Nike gear, and then bolting for the exits in a matter of seconds. Investigators say the crew made off with roughly 113 items worth about $10,800 at retail in what they are calling a coordinated, flash‑mob style theft. No arrests have been announced, and police are asking for the public’s help to put names to the faces in the video.
How the theft unfolded
The theft went down around 5:15 p.m. on Sunday at the DICK'S in the 2100 block of S. Telegraph Road. According to investigators, three women and five men fanned out inside the store and quickly zeroed in on Nike clothing, scooping up what police describe as an organized haul of branded apparel. As reported by ClickOnDetroit, police put the merchandise’s retail value at roughly $10,800 and released surveillance video in hopes that someone recognizes the suspects.
Police: 'flash rob' ended in seconds
Officers were dispatched to the store on a report of retail fraud and later described what happened as a "flash rob" where a fast-moving group overwhelms staff and gets out before anyone can react. WWJ Newsradio reports the suspects fled in two vehicles: a white, older-model Chevy Suburban and a white Chevy Blazer. Two pieces of merchandise that were dropped in the parking lot were later recovered and valued at about $220.
Video shows suspects timing their move
Raw surveillance footage reviewed by reporters shows the suspects biding their time and watching employees before making their move. Once staff members looked away, the group quickly cleared racks, stuffing apparel into bags and under their clothing, then streamed out of the store in a tight window of a few seconds. That footage, along with additional details from investigators, was published by the Detroit Free Press.
Why investigators worry about organized retail crime
Police say the theft has all the hallmarks of what law enforcement and loss-prevention teams label organized retail crime: a coordinated group targeting high-value, easy-to-resell merchandise. A National Retail Federation study released in 2025 found that shoplifting incidents and theft-related violence have been on the rise and warned that organized rings are increasingly mixing up their tactics across brick-and-mortar stores and online marketplaces, which can make local investigations tougher to crack.
