Brockton public works employees stumbled onto a grim scene late Thursday when they noticed what appeared to be a body caught in a water trap at a municipal treatment facility on Oak Hill Way. Police responded, confirmed that the person was dead, and kept the area locked down as the investigation continued. Officials have not yet released the victim's name or said whether they are treating the death as suspicious.
Discovery and response
According to NBC Boston, Department of Public Works staff spotted the body in the plant's water trap around 5 p.m. and immediately contacted police. Officers confirmed a deceased person was in the trap, and investigators remained at the scene into the evening as they worked to piece together what happened. Officials released only limited information while the inquiry was still active.
Where it happened
As reported by WCVB, the discovery was made at Brockton's wastewater reclamation campus on Oak Hill Way, the city's sewage treatment facility rather than the drinking water filtration plant that serves customers from Silver Lake. A U.S. Environmental Protection Agency draft permit identifies the site as the Brockton Advanced Water Reclamation Facility at 303 Oak Hill Way, confirming the location of the treatment works.
Past discoveries at the plant
Local reporting and a 2024 press release from the Plymouth County District Attorney's Office have documented at least two prior recoveries at the Oak Hill Way plant last year, and officials at the time said no foul play was suspected in those cases. Those earlier notices also stated that the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner accepted jurisdiction to determine cause and manner of death, consistent with the DA's release and local coverage.
Investigators have not released the victim's identity or additional details in the latest case, and police said the probe remained active as of Thursday night, NBC Boston reported. This story will be updated if authorities provide further information.
