An argument between two men on a Boyle Heights street corner turned violent Friday night when one of them pulled a gun and opened fire, wounding the other, according to police.
The shooting was reported at about 9:13 p.m. near the intersection of State Street and Pomeroy Avenue. An ambulance took the injured man to a hospital, where he was listed in stable condition, and the shooter fled before officers arrived, police said.
According to MyNewsLA, which cited a Los Angeles Police Department spokesman, the suspected shooter was described as a 35-year-old man and the victim as a 44-year-old man. Investigators were on scene Friday night, and no arrest was reported in early media accounts.
Police response and investigation
Officers were dispatched to the intersection and detectives began working the scene, collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses as the investigation continued. Officials have not publicly released the names of those involved and have not disclosed a possible motive.
Neighborhood context
The shooting comes on the heels of other high-profile incidents in Boyle Heights this month. On June 9, a police pursuit ended in a gunfight that wounded a suspect and left an officer struck in his ballistic vest, which stopped the round, as reported by The Los Angeles Times. That chase and other emergencies have put visible strain on local emergency resources.
Earlier this month, a massive warehouse fire in Boyle Heights drew a large LAFD response and raised air-quality concerns across nearby neighborhoods. We will update this post as police release further details and if investigators announce any arrests.
