Pinellas County deputies say they have taken down a major cocaine trafficking network after a wiretap-heavy, multiagency investigation that stretched across Florida and into Texas. The operation led to multiple arrests and the seizure of roughly 132 pounds of suspected cocaine, a haul Sheriff Bob Gualtieri is calling the county's largest drug trafficking bust in more than four decades.
Investigators say the ring was headed by 35-year-old Daniel Pinales of Brandon, who allegedly arranged shipments from a supplier in El Paso, Texas, and used a Rocky Point apartment in Tampa as a stash house. Deputies reported recovering about six kilograms of cocaine from a rented SUV, estimated at roughly $2.1 million and included in the larger 132-pound total, and said wiretaps combined with months of surveillance helped them map out the organization, according to FOX 13 Tampa Bay.
How Deputies Say the Shipments Moved
According to law enforcement, the crew relied on a routine that played out month after month. Truck drivers allegedly hid kilos of cocaine inside two inoperable tractor-trailers that were used as props, then met local couriers near a hotel off S.R. 56 in Wesley Chapel to pass off duffel bags packed with drugs. Deputies say they watched one of those handoffs in Columbia County, then later saw a suspect bolt from detectives after a meeting on Fletcher Avenue in Tampa, an encounter that led to a traffic stop and subsequent arrests, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.
Largest Seizure in Decades, Sheriff Says
Sheriff Bob Gualtieri told reporters the investigation grew out of a coordinated effort with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and described the haul as "the single-largest drug seizure in Pinellas County in more than 40 years." He said investigators believe the organization was moving an estimated 700 kilograms of cocaine a year, a volume that helped trigger the broad, multiagency response, according to FOX 13 Tampa Bay.
Legal Status and Next Steps
Officials say multiple suspects have been arrested and that the case remains very much active while the seized narcotics are tested and additional evidence is processed.
