Breakfast Republic is about to lose three of its San Diego County outposts, with Encinitas, Ocean Beach and North Park scheduled to serve their last plates next Sunday. For a brand born in San Diego and built around oversized brunches, the simultaneous shutdown is a noticeable retreat at home, even as its parent company talks up expansion elsewhere.
Rise & Shine Restaurant Group said the closures are tied to expiring leases and a decision to expand in other markets, according to 10News. The company says it plans new Breakfast Republic restaurants in Palm Springs, Orange County and Los Angeles, while a Breakfast Company location is expected in the Dallas area later this year. That would be Rise & Shine’s first Texas restaurant.
San Diego’s Original Breakfast Republic Is Among Closures
The North Park location carries extra weight for the local chain: It was the original Breakfast Republic, opened in 2015, according to SanDiegoVille. Encinitas followed in 2016, and Ocean Beach opened the following year, making all three among the brand’s earliest San Diego-area restaurants.
That timing gives the closures a distinctly local sting. Breakfast Republic’s quirky, highly branded brunch formula helped turn the company into one of San Diego’s most recognizable homegrown restaurant groups, but the next phase is increasingly focused beyond the county.
The brand’s official locations page presents Breakfast Republic as a Southern California chain with restaurants across San Diego, Orange County, Los Angeles and the Coachella Valley. The company has not announced opening dates or addresses for most of the planned new locations.
Another Local Retreat For Rise & Shine
The three closures follow an earlier round of contraction for Rise & Shine. In 2025, the group shut its La Jolla Breakfast Republic after the property owner bought out the lease, while prior coverage from SanDiegoVille also noted closures involving other restaurants tied to the company.
For San Diego regulars, the deadline is straightforward: the Encinitas, Ocean Beach and North Park restaurants are expected to remain open through next Sunday, when they will serve their final guests, according to 10News. After that, the pancakes, benedicts and brunch cocktails will have to be chased at one of the company’s remaining locations—or in whichever new market gets the next rooster-themed sign.
