City rules treat the sale, use, and detonation of all consumer fireworks as a nuisance and bar them inside Buda and within that 5,000-foot buffer just outside the city line. The only legal booms are those the city signs off on, with a public display that has a valid fire marshal permit, according to the City of Buda. Even then, permitted displays in the 5,000-foot zone are locked into a tight window on July 4, from sunset to 10:00 p.m.

Violating the fireworks rules is a misdemeanor that can cost up to $500 for each offense, the city notes in a City of Buda notice. Officials say every launch, sale, or detonation can be counted separately, so one backyard stash could add up fast. The city’s warning applies to both individual users and any sellers trying to operate inside the restricted area.
