The scrutiny centers on Lone Star Pups, a business that sells doodle and other designer breeds — exactly the kind of purchase where a reassuring label can carry a very expensive amount of weight.
According to FOX 7 Austin, the Texas Attorney General’s Office is examining possible misleading claims about the origin and veterinary care of Lone Star Pups puppies. State officials also questioned veterinary exams performed in an Ohio area known for large-scale breeding operations and raised concerns about the fine print in the company’s 10-year health guarantee.
The OFA Certification Question
The AG’s office told FOX 7 that Lone Star Pups says most of its breeding dogs are certified by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals, but that the company conducts only two of the four tests officials say are needed for certification. The distinction matters because “tested” and “certified” are not interchangeable terms, especially when buyers are relying on health claims to choose a family pet.
The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals says its database covers screening categories including hips, elbows, eyes, cardiac conditions, patellar luxation and DNA-based diseases, while breed-specific recommendations can vary. Lone Star Pups’ own standards page currently advertises “99%+ OFA tested,” along with a 10-year health guarantee, but the state’s questions focus on whether those marketing claims accurately describe the testing that was completed.
A Guarantee With Significant Fine Print
Lone Star Pups’ published guarantee says buyers must activate major medical pet insurance before the puppy arrives and maintain coverage for at least six months to qualify for the replacement program. The terms generally provide store credit equal to the original invoice rather than a cash refund, while medical reimbursements depend on an insurer approving the claim and other conditions being met.
That structure does not by itself establish that the guarantee is unlawful, but it explains why the Attorney General’s Office is looking closely at how the promise is presented to consumers. A “10-year guarantee” can sound broad in an advertisement while operating under detailed requirements that buyers may not see until they reach the full terms.
Questions Preceded The State Investigation
The Better Business Bureau says it contacted Lone Star Pups in October 2025 about claims that puppies were sourced from licensed and inspected USDA breeders and that 99% of breeding parents were OFA certified. The BBB profile says the company had not provided the requested substantiation as of November 7, 2025, while also cautioning that its business profiles are not independent government findings.
Lone Star Pups told FOX 7 that it had not been contacted directly by the Texas Attorney General’s Office or received a formal request for information. The company said it supports consumer-protection efforts, will cooperate with any inquiry and remains committed to the families it has served.
A Broader Texas Dog-Sales Crackdown
The Caldwell inquiry arrives as other Texas dog sellers face scrutiny over alleged misrepresentations. In March, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Texas announced federal charges against a Hopkins County breeder accused of operating without a license and making false claims about dogs’ parentage, health and training; an indictment is an allegation, not proof of guilt.
