Andy Garcia will spend the rest of his life in prison after a Charlotte jury convicted him of first-degree murder in the 2021 shooting death of Selvin Yovani Lara-Reyes.
The 24-year-old was sentenced Wednesday to life without the possibility of parole, closing a case that began with a deadly confrontation at a south Charlotte apartment complex more than five years ago. According to WSOC-TV, Superior Court Judge Athena F. Brooks presided over the trial, which began last Monday and was prosecuted by the Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office Homicide Team.
A 2021 Shooting At Oak Meadow Court
Lara-Reyes was fatally shot on March 31, 2021, while hosting family and friends at his apartment on Oak Meadow Court. WCCB Charlotte reported at the time that Charlotte-Mecklenburg police arrested Garcia and Mario Alexander Monroy after identifying them in connection with the killing.
Investigators said Garcia, who lived in a neighboring apartment, returned with several acquaintances after an earlier disagreement. The group allegedly confronted Lara-Reyes in the backyard, opened fire, and followed him inside when he tried to escape; Lara-Reyes was struck four times and died from a back wound, while a juvenile resident suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot injury to the hand.
Phone Messages And Gun Evidence Featured In Case
Evidence described by WSOC-TV included messages on Garcia’s cellphone that detectives said contained admissions about his involvement. Investigators also found photographs showing Garcia with several handguns, collected spent cartridge cases from the common area and apartment, and recovered live ammunition during a search of his residence.
What Life Without Parole Means
Garcia’s sentence removes the possibility of routine parole release. The North Carolina Department of Public Safety identifies life sentences for first-degree murder as excluded from its parole-eligible population, meaning the conviction carries a permanent prison sentence unless changed through a separate legal process.
