Baba Saj, a Chicago-born Middle Eastern chain known for saj-baked flatbreads and shawarma sandwiches, is bringing a new outpost to Tampa near the University of South Florida, with a fast-casual setup geared toward quick pickup and dine-in along the busy East Fletcher Avenue corridor.

The Tampa location is set to take over the space at 13585 Cypress Glen Lane, just off East Fletcher Avenue and within easy reach of USF. An official opening date has not yet been announced, but an Instagram teaser earlier this spring promised that "the wait is almost over," according to That's So Tampa. The storefront sits in a student-adjacent retail strip that is well positioned to draw both lunch traffic and late-night crowds.
From Bakery To Shawarma Staple
Baba Saj started out as an artisanal pita bakery before transitioning into a full restaurant in 2013 and gradually expanding across the Chicago area. The brand highlights family-marinated shawarma and a streamlined fast-casual model, and its website leans on its Chicago roots and top-selling shawarma sandwiches, according to Baba Saj.
What To Expect From The Menu
At the center of the operation will be a traditional saj dome used to bake thin flatbreads, with a menu built around shawarma sandwiches and bowls, pitas, and shareable plates such as falafel and baba ghanoush. That's So Tampa reports that the restaurant sources za'atar from the mountains of Lebanon, stone-grinds tahini in-house each week, and ages its Aleppo pepper for 12 months to deepen flavor. The fast-casual format is expected to support both pickup orders and in-store dining.

Located a short distance from USF's campus, the new spot lands in a neighborhood where roughly 50,000 students, faculty and staff live and study, creating a built-in audience for quick, affordable meals, per the University of South Florida.
