An adult man was shot inside a car trunk in Chino Hills on Wednesday night, then the driver was fatally shot by a San Bernardino County sheriff's deputy moments later, authorities said. The chaotic scene began with reports of gunfire and screams and ended with a second occupant in custody and a large law-enforcement presence in the neighborhood.

Deputies were dispatched at about 10:14 p.m. to the 2100 block of Monteverde Drive after a reporting party heard gunshots and someone screaming, according to the sheriff's account. While deputies responded, they spotted a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed and attempted a traffic stop.

How The Wandering Ridge Stop Turned Deadly

The driver failed to yield, leading to a short pursuit that ended on Wandering Ridge Drive. Deputies ordered two occupants out of the vehicle; the passenger complied and was taken into custody, while the driver did not follow commands.

The driver then approached the vehicle's trunk and fired into an adult male who was inside, according to the department's update. A deputy fired, striking the driver, and deputies attempted lifesaving measures on both men before they were pronounced dead at the scene. No deputies were injured, and the passenger was not hurt.

Homicide Detail Takes Over Investigation

The Sheriff's Department's Specialized Investigations Division, Homicide Detail responded and assumed the investigation. The department has not publicly identified the two men or explained what led to the initial shooting, and the relationship between the occupants and the man in the trunk remains unclear.

On Thursday, law enforcement remained in part of the 2400 block of Wandering Ridge Drive. Residents and other drivers could leave the community in either direction toward Chino Avenue, while anyone with information was asked to call the Homicide Detail at 909-890-4904 or contact We-Tip at 844-909-3006.

The investigation remains active, and additional details may be released as detectives review evidence from the shooting, pursuit and scene on Wandering Ridge Drive.
