Clayton County deputies say a routine traffic stop turned into a foot chase and a major drug bust after they pulled over a driver and later found about 3 kilograms of methamphetamine in the vehicle. Investigators estimate the haul could be worth roughly $300,000 on the street. The sheriff’s B.A.T. Unit handled the stop, searched the vehicle, recovered the suspected meth, and seized the car. Officials have not released the suspect’s identity or any formal charges.

As reported by 95.5 WSB, the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office credited the B.A.T. Unit with the recovery and described the bust as the result of proactive policing. The vehicle was impounded while the investigation continues.

What deputies say about the stop

In a statement to 95.5 WSB, the sheriff’s office said the driver made a run for it rather than stay and talk.

“Much to our surprise, the driver decided that fleeing on foot was a better option than having a conversation with our deputies,” the statement read. “Unfortunately for him, he picked the wrong county to try that stunt.”

Deputies said the suspect was taken into custody after the chase and that the suspected meth was discovered inside the vehicle during a follow-up search.

How this fits a bigger pattern

The Clayton County seizure comes on the heels of much larger federal cases in the same area. The U.S. Attorney’s Office and the DEA reported that agents recovered roughly 200 pounds of methamphetamine from a Forest Park residence and filed federal charges in mid‑June. The agencies described that larger operation as preventing a “devastating amount” of the drug from reaching neighborhoods.

Other recent local busts

Traffic-stop drug busts have been popping up across metro Atlanta this month. In one recent case, officers seized roughly half a pound of meth during a Marietta traffic stop. Fox 5 Atlanta reported that arrest and others that highlight stepped-up enforcement in surrounding counties.

Authorities have not yet said whether state or federal prosecutors will handle the Clayton County case. The sheriff’s office has withheld identifying details about the suspect, citing the active investigation, and asked anyone with information to contact Clayton County officials.
