According to CBS News Philadelphia, the fire was centered in the 1500 block of Clayton Road, where Chopper 3 footage showed firefighters on the roof while flames punched through at least one home. The station reported that there appeared to be about five rowhomes affected. There was still no immediate word on injuries or how the fire started, and CBS News Philadelphia said the scene remained an active response as crews worked to bring the blaze under control.
Heat wave worsened conditions
Local forecasts had already warned of extreme heat across the region, with temperatures expected to climb into the triple digits, a setup that can make firefighting and rescue work even more dangerous for crews sealed inside heavy protective gear.
