Cleveland Clinic is taking another major swing at expanding its Avon campus, with a new $322 million plan aimed at adding hospital beds, specialty care, cancer treatment and a parking garage. The project would reshape one of Lorain County’s biggest medical campuses while giving the health system more room to handle the west side’s growing appetite for care.
The latest plan includes additions to both Avon Hospital and the Richard E. Jacobs Health Center, according to Crain's Cleveland Business. The reported price tag is below the $340 million estimate Cleveland Clinic announced in June 2025, suggesting the project has continued to evolve as designs and costs have been refined.
Avon Hospital Would Get More Beds, Operating Rooms And ER Space
The hospital portion calls for a new bed tower, additional operating rooms, and expanded laboratory, imaging and emergency department space. Cleveland Clinic’s original announcement described the work as a way to increase inpatient capacity and support more complex care at a hospital that opened in 2016 with 126 beds.
That first phase of planning also pointed to the pressure building around the campus. In its June 2025 announcement, Cleveland Clinic said demand for care on Cleveland’s west side was rising and that Avon’s facilities needed to grow with the communities they serve.
Health Center Expansion Brings More Exam Rooms And Cancer Care
The Richard E. Jacobs Health Center is slated to add roughly 90 exam rooms for preventive and specialty care, along with expanded cancer services that include radiation oncology. The center already offers primary and specialty care, outpatient surgery, imaging, chemotherapy infusion and physical therapy, according to Cleveland Magazine.
A new parking garage is also part of the plan, a practical addition for a campus that is expected to see more patients, caregivers and staff as the medical buildings expand. The garage may not be the flashiest piece of a $322 million construction project, but anyone who has circled a hospital lot with an appointment clock ticking knows it is hardly a side quest.
The Avon Project Is Part Of A Larger West Side Buildout
Cleveland Clinic has been expanding across its west submarket, including a major Fairview Hospital project with a new cancer center, medical office building and parking structure. The health system said in a June 2026 update that the Fairview project had reached a steel-topping milestone, underscoring that the west-side construction push is moving from announcement to reality.
The timeline for Avon has also shifted since the initial announcement. Cleveland Clinic’s 2025 materials anticipated completion in 2028, while the health system’s financial filing for the quarter ending March 31, 2026, said construction was expected to be completed in 2029.
For Avon and nearby communities, the end result is a larger local care hub with more inpatient capacity, emergency space, diagnostics, outpatient appointments and cancer treatment under one sprawling roofline. The new plan makes clear that Cleveland Clinic does not view the campus as finished yet, it is still building Avon into a regional medical center designed for the next wave of growth.
