Cleveland woke up to a wall of humidity this morning as July kicks off with serious heat. Skies are clear, temperatures are already in the low 80s, and dew points in the low to mid 70s are making it feel sticky before the real daytime scorch even gets going.
An Extreme Heat Warning is in effect through 8 p.m. tomorrow. According to NWS Cleveland, heat index values could reach as high as 108°F, raising the risk of heat-related illness for anyone who works or spends extended time outdoors.
Afternoon Heat
Expect a high near 95°F today with west winds around 9 mph. The humidity will push feels-like temperatures into the low 100s, with forecast heat index values around 104°F this afternoon. Overnight lows will only dip into the upper 70s, which means very little relief once the sun goes down.
Holiday Weekend Outlook
Tomorrow looks even hotter, with highs around 97°F and heat index values up to about 106°F. That upper-level ridge is expected to start breaking down late in the week, bringing a chance of showers and thunderstorms Friday into the weekend. Storms are likely Friday night and could linger into Saturday, July 4.
Where To Cool Off
The city has opened several Neighborhood Resource & Recreation Centers as cooling centers. They are scheduled to be open June 30 and July 1 from 11:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., providing comfort areas and filtered water, according to the City of Cleveland 311. Residents who need a cool place are urged to call 311 for the latest hours and availability.
Heat Safety
Drink plenty of fluids, avoid heavy outdoor exertion during the midafternoon, and check on older neighbors, young children, and pets. If someone shows signs of heat stroke, such as confusion, fainting, or a very high body temperature, seek emergency medical care immediately.
We will update this as conditions change. Follow local officials and NWS Cleveland for the latest advisories over the holiday week. Stay hydrated and scale back those midday outdoor plans.
