What started as a big late-night party at an Airbnb in Cincinnati's Clifton neighborhood turned into a porch shootout early today, with roughly 50 shots fired and one person ending up in the hospital.
The gunfire broke out around 12:30 a.m. at a short-term rental near Vine Street and West Nixon Street, where neighbors and officers described a chaotic scene as police broke up the gathering and searched the house for victims and witnesses. ShotSpotter, the city's gunshot detection system, registered approximately 50 rounds, police told reporters.
Officers found multiple shell casings at the property and said most of the shots came from the front porch while someone inside the home returned fire. One person drove to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center with a shoulder wound and is expected to recover. Another individual was detained on a concealed-weapon charge but “is not a shooting suspect,” according to WKRC.
ShotSpotter And The Police Response
Cincinnati has leaned on acoustic gun-detection technology in recent years to flag potential shootings that might otherwise slip by without a 911 call. Earlier reporting from WLWT noted that ShotSpotter was expanded to neighborhoods including Over-the-Rhine, the West End and Pendleton in an effort to boost response times and improve incident detection.
Investigation Still Underway
Police say the case is very much active and they have not publicly identified a shooting suspect. Detectives are processing evidence and interviewing partygoers who stuck around long enough to talk. Authorities briefed reporters at the scene and released details through local outlets, according to WKRC.
Why It Matters
Large short-term-rental parties have turned violent in other cities, a trend that has made police and neighbors increasingly wary of big gatherings in temporary homes. In a 2022 case in Pittsburgh, authorities said roughly 50 shots were fired at an Airbnb party, and two juveniles were killed, a grim example cited by ABC News.
