A 21-year-old woman in Holly Springs is facing a statutory rape charge after police say she was accused of having sexual contact with a 15-year-old boy. Officers arrested her on Friday, and she was booked into the county jail, where she remains held pending bond, according to police.
The Holly Springs Police Department opened its investigation on July 9 after the teen's family filed a report and turned over cellphone messages and other material they believed were evidence. Family members told officers they wanted criminal charges pursued, and investigators say the phone records became a key part of the case, according to WREG.
What Mississippi Law Says
Mississippi's statutory rape law covers specific situations involving sexual intercourse with minors. Under state statute, it is a crime to engage in intercourse with a child who is at least 14 but under 16 if the accused is sufficiently older, and the minor's consent does not provide a legal defense. As laid out in Mississippi Code §97‑3‑65, penalties increase depending on the age gap between the two and the age of the defendant.
Investigation and Booking
Police identified the suspect as 21-year-old Ciara Hughes. They say she was taken into custody, transported to the Marshall County Sheriff's Department, booked into jail and held pending bond. Investigators have not publicly detailed when the alleged encounters took place or whether they are looking at any additional suspects, according to WREG.
Potential Consequences
In Mississippi, a conviction for a statutory sex offense can bring prison time and fines, and certain offenses can also require registration on the state sex-offender registry. For some offenses, that registration can last a lifetime, depending on the conduct and ages involved. The registry is maintained by the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, which also spells out which convictions require registration and the long-term reporting obligations for those listed, according to the Mississippi Department of Public Safety.
