A family argument over barking dogs in a quiet Lancaster County neighborhood ended in tragedy on Monday, with police saying a man fatally stabbed his sister and seriously injured their brother inside an East Hempfield Township home. Officers found the siblings inside the house, where the woman was pronounced dead at the scene and the wounded man was rushed to a hospital. The suspect was arrested later that morning and is being held at Lancaster County Prison as the case moves into the courts.
According to a news release from the Lancaster County District Attorney's Office, officers were called to the 1100 block of Persimmon Drive at about 10:34 a.m. Monday. They found 28-year-old Elyse Adolph dead and a 24-year-old man suffering from multiple stab wounds. Prosecutors say the suspect, identified as 26-year-old Bryan Emeric Adolph, became enraged that the victims' dogs were "continuously" barking and allegedly struck one of the animals before the violence began. Investigators say he then took several small knives from a kitchen drawer and began attacking his sister, according to the release.
CBS Pittsburgh reports that, according to charging documents, Adolph told investigators he believes he stabbed his sister about 20 times. He then allegedly went upstairs to shower and wash off the blood before leaving the home. During the attack, the siblings' brother reportedly tried to intervene, striking the suspect with a glass plate. He was stabbed multiple times in the process. Officers later arrested Adolph near Route 30 and Good Drive shortly before noon and said he still had blood on his legs and head when he was taken into custody.
Charges and court schedule
Prosecutors have charged Bryan Emeric Adolph with criminal homicide, two counts of aggravated assault and one count of possessing an instrument of crime. At a preliminary arraignment, Judge Brian Chudzik denied bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 4, according to the news release from the Lancaster County District Attorney's Office.
Investigation and response
East Hempfield Township police and Lancaster County detectives are leading the investigation, with support from Pennsylvania State Police aviation units and K-9 teams, according to local reporting by Daily Voice. Authorities have said there is no ongoing threat to the public. The wounded brother remains hospitalized, and his name has not been released. Investigators are asking anyone with additional information to contact East Hempfield Township Police or Lancaster County Detectives.
