San Antonio police say a 19-year-old man turned a routine call into a stinging confrontation Friday when he allegedly pepper-sprayed two officers who were trying to arrest him on the Far West Side.
The officers were responding to a reported assault in the 8900 block of Eagle Bend around 4:13 p.m. on July 10 when the encounter unfolded, according to Fox San Antonio. Police say the man pulled out pepper spray and hit both officers as they moved in to take him into custody. Despite the chemical blast, officers were able to detain him at the scene without further incident.
The 19-year-old was later booked on charges that included assault on a peace officer and assault causing bodily injury involving a family member.
Charges and Legal Context
The man faces assault on a peace officer and assault causing bodily injury involving a family member, both charges that carry elevated penalties in Texas. Under the Texas Penal Code, an assault against a peace officer can be filed as a felony, with penalties increasing if a deadly weapon is used or if serious bodily injury occurs, according to the Texas Penal Code.
Similar Incidents in the City
This is not the first time pepper spray has turned up in a high-profile case in San Antonio. Last November, police arrested a 17-year-old accused of pepper-spraying passengers on a River Walk barge, including a child, an incident that led to felony charges, San Antonio Express-News reported. That earlier case underscored how quickly confrontations involving chemical irritants can escalate into felony territory in Bexar County.

Fox San Antonio reports the arrest and booking took place Friday. As of Saturday afternoon, the San Antonio Police Department had not posted a public news release about the incident on its official news page.
