A tractor-trailer driver is facing charges after a collision at Pageland Highway and White Store Road yesterday in Monroe left the driver of a Toyota Camry dead. The wreck unfolded around the morning commute, shutting down the busy intersection as investigators worked to document and reconstruct the scene. Authorities say the case is still active while officers gather more evidence and witness statements.
Police account of the crash
According to a Facebook post from the Monroe Police Department, the crash happened at about 8:20 a.m. Wednesday when a tractor-trailer went off the right side of the road, then entered the intersection at Pageland Highway and White Store Road and hit a Toyota Camry. The Camry's driver later died from injuries suffered in the collision, police said.
Investigators identified the truck driver as 64-year-old Charles Allen Davis of Pennsylvania. The department said Davis has been charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and reported that he fell asleep while operating the tractor-trailer.
Fatigue and the risks for commercial drivers
Drowsy driving is a well-known problem for motorists and can be especially dangerous for long-haul and commercial drivers who work irregular or extended hours. The NHTSA reports that drowsy drivers were involved in roughly 1.6 percent of traffic fatalities in 2021, while noting that the true toll is hard to pin down because fatigue is not always easy to document after a crash.
Guidance from NIOSH highlights factors that can increase crash risk for truck drivers, including untreated sleep disorders, shift work and long duty periods that cut into rest time.
What the charge means
The charge in this case, misdemeanor death by vehicle, applies when a driver unintentionally causes a death while violating a traffic law other than impaired driving. North Carolina defines and classifies the offense in N.C. Gen. Stat. § 20-141.4, which lists misdemeanor death by vehicle as a Class A1 misdemeanor. Whether prosecutors seek additional or more serious charges will depend on what the ongoing investigation turns up.
Local impact and next steps
The intersection of Pageland Highway and White Store Road sits near Lake Lee, in a stretch that mixes rural and residential properties outside Monroe's downtown, where neighborhood traffic and commercial vehicles routinely cross paths. As the Charlotte Observer notes, that corner is a familiar landmark for people driving between Monroe and surrounding communities.
The Monroe Police Department says the investigation remains underway and that the current charge was filed after detectives completed their initial on-scene work.
