Charlotte is starting Saturday mostly cloudy and muggy, with temperatures near 70 degrees and a high of about 83 expected later today. The bigger weather story arrives next week, when sunny skies and highs in the 90s take over the forecast.
Showers and thunderstorms could develop from around noon through 5 p.m., with the best chances during the midafternoon. The National Weather Service puts the overall chance of rain at 30%, with new rainfall generally expected to stay below a tenth of an inch.
Afternoon Storms Stay Spotty
Winds will remain light from the east and northeast at 1 to 6 mph, so there is not much of a breeze to break the humidity. A few storms could be stronger, particularly along and near the I-77 corridor, but storm coverage around Charlotte is expected to be limited compared with the mountains.
Tonight should be mostly cloudy, with a low near 69 and only a small chance of additional rain. Sunday brings partly sunny skies and a high near 87, followed by a mostly sunny Monday with temperatures climbing to about 93.
Heat Builds Through The Workweek
The heat turns up sharply Tuesday through Friday, with highs of 95, 96, 97 and 96 degrees, respectively. Overnight lows will remain in the low to mid-70s, offering limited relief once the workweek gets going.
The National Weather Service forecast discussion warns that heat index values could reach the upper 90s to triple digits in the lower elevations by Tuesday or Wednesday. Heat Advisory conditions may become possible later in the week, although forecasters say confidence is still limited.
Best Window For Outdoor Plans
Saturday morning and Sunday look like the more manageable parts of the forecast, though Saturday afternoon plans should allow for a quick downpour or thunderstorm detour. By Tuesday, the combination of bright sun, high humidity and temperatures in the mid-90s will make shaded breaks and regular hydration especially important.
