A man was shot and killed Thursday night in North City while St. Louis police officers were already in the area and saw the gunfire break out near Union Boulevard and Terry Avenue, according to investigators. Officers detained at least four people at the scene as homicide detectives stepped in to lead the case. Authorities said no officers fired their weapons during the incident.
Officers Say They Saw Shooting As It Happened
According to First Alert 4, St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department officers were in the area when they “observed a shooting in progress” at Union and Terry and quickly detained multiple people while detectives arrived. The outlet reported that homicide detectives have taken over the investigation and that officers were interviewing witnesses at the scene.
Detectives Working To Piece Together What Happened
Homicide detectives stayed on scene into the night, working to sort out what led to the deadly gunfire and who, exactly, will face charges. “No officers fired their weapons while intervening,” the department told reporters, according to First Alert 4.
Shooting Hits As City Touts Crime Declines
The killing comes as city leaders have been pointing to broader drops in violent crime. A public-safety summary released earlier this year said homicides and other major offenses had declined, with the first months of 2025 logging the fewest reported crimes in more than two decades. Local officials have credited targeted enforcement and community programs for those reductions, per the City of St. Louis.
