Late Tuesday morning, a stretch of Kansas Avenue in Northwest D.C. that usually hums with school traffic turned into an active crime scene when two people were shot near a cluster of charter school campuses, police said.
Officers responded to the 4500 block of Kansas Avenue NW at about 11:44 a.m. and found two victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were conscious and breathing when first responders arrived, according to police. D.C. Fire and EMS took the pair to a nearby hospital for treatment, and authorities say the investigation is ongoing.
Metropolitan Police officers confirmed the shooting scene and the victims' transport to the hospital, according to WJLA. The outlet reports that detectives began canvassing the Kansas Avenue corridor soon after the gunfire, but police did not immediately share information about any suspects or provide an update on the victims' conditions.
Charter school corridor on edge
The 4500 block of Kansas Avenue NW cuts through a tight corridor of charter school campuses, which helps explain why families in the area tend to track incidents here closely. The shooting fits into a troubling pattern residents have been watching across Northwest D.C. this spring. The Metropolitan Police Department investigated a fatal shooting on the 4500 block of Wisconsin Avenue NW in May, and an April incident left two men and a 5-year-old wounded in the Truxton Circle area, underscoring how gun violence continues to rattle neighborhoods that also host schools, playgrounds and busy commercial strips.
