
A 33-year-old motorcyclist died early Friday after colliding with a car at a Northwest Side intersection, according to Chicago police. The rider was taken to Lutheran General Hospital and later pronounced dead. The crash happened about 3:30 a.m. in the 4400 block of North Cumberland Avenue in the Dunning neighborhood and also injured the driver of a Toyota Prius.

As reported by the Chicago Sun-Times, police said the southbound motorcycle ran a red light and struck an eastbound Toyota Prius in the intersection. The paper reports the Prius driver, a 31-year-old man, suffered minor injuries and was taken to Resurrection Hospital in fair condition. Chicago police said the Major Accidents Investigation Unit has opened a probe into the crash.
Motorcycle safety context
NHTSA's 2022 data show 6,218 motorcyclists were killed that year, about 15% of all traffic fatalities, according to NHTSA. The agency also reports motorcyclists have a far higher fatality rate per vehicle miles traveled than passenger vehicle occupants, highlighting the particular danger riders face on city streets.
