A late-night collision at a busy east Vancouver intersection left an ATV rider dead on Saturday, turning an ordinary weekend into a crime scene under floodlights.

The crash happened around 11:30 p.m. at NE 76th Street and NE 137th Avenue, according to officials. Emergency responders pronounced the 39-year-old ATV driver dead at the scene. The Clark County Sheriff's Office has opened a traffic-homicide investigation.

As reported by The Oregonian/OregonLive, a 2008 Ford Escape was heading east on NE 76th Street and attempted a left turn to go north on NE 137th Avenue when it struck a 2003 Kawasaki ATV traveling west on NE 76th. The sheriff's release quoted by the paper said the ATV rider, a 39-year-old man, was not wearing a helmet or other protective gear and was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities told the paper that alcohol may have been a factor and that the Escape's driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

Investigation Under Way

The Clark County Sheriff's Office Traffic Homicide Unit is leading the probe, working to reconstruct the collision, collect evidence and interview witnesses. Investigators typically process on-scene evidence and may order toxicology testing as the inquiry continues. Officials have not announced any charges while the investigation remains active.

ATV Safety Risks

Federal safety research has repeatedly flagged helmet nonuse and alcohol as major contributors to fatal ATV crashes. A CDC review of Consumer Product Safety Commission data found helmets were often not worn in fatal ATV cases and that alcohol or drugs were commonly present in incidents with known status, and the CPSC urges riders to wear helmets, avoid alcohol and keep ATVs off public roads; see CDC and guidance from the CPSC for safety tips.

The sheriff's office did not immediately release the rider's name, citing the need to notify family members first. The Traffic Homicide Unit is asking anyone with information about the crash to contact the sheriff's office as the investigation continues.
