A person was shot and killed just outside the Ohio Expo Center and state fairgrounds in Columbus on Tuesday evening, turning an ordinary weeknight near a major city venue into an active crime scene.
Scene and police response
According to WSYX/ABC6, officers were called to reports of gunfire at the intersection of E. 17th Avenue and Dora Drive at about 7:22 p.m. When Columbus police arrived, they found a victim who was rushed to a hospital in critical condition.
The victim was pronounced dead at 7:57 p.m., WSYX/ABC6 reports. As of Tuesday night, detectives were processing the area and no suspects had been taken into custody.
Where it happened
The shooting took place adjacent to the Ohio Expo Center and State Fairgrounds. The Ohio Expo Center lists its main address as 717 E. 17th Avenue, putting the crime scene just outside one of Columbus' busiest event hubs.
The timing is drawing extra attention because the Ohio State Fair is scheduled to run July 29–August 9 this year, a stretch that typically brings heavier traffic and larger crowds to the surrounding streets.
Investigation ongoing
Columbus police have not publicly identified the victim, and investigators have not released any information about a possible motive. Detectives continue to investigate the shooting, WSYX/ABC6 reports.
Authorities have said they will share additional details as new information becomes available.
