A 28-year-old man is in jail on suspicion of murder after what police describe as a late-night fight inside a central Phoenix apartment left a 40-year-old man dead. The confrontation unfolded just before 4 a.m. in a unit near 38th Street and McDowell Road. Officers say the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials identified the victim as 40-year-old George Fuentes and the suspect as 28-year-old Josiah Aries Mahape, according to Arizona's Family. Investigators say Mahape slipped out a back window after the altercation but was later found nearby and taken into custody.
Police Say Fight Over Missing Rental Car Turned Fatal
According to court documents and investigators, the deadly encounter started when Mahape returned to Fuentes' apartment after midnight and confronted him about a missing rental car. In an interview with detectives, Mahape reportedly said he "put Fuentes in a chokehold for two to three minutes" and later "ended up at the airport and was unsure how he got there," the filings state.
Investigators say the rental car tied to the dispute was recovered at the airport with an open container inside and vomit outside the vehicle. Arizona's Family reported those details after reviewing the court documents.
Airport Rental Dispute Echoes Broader Car-Theft Concerns
Sit a missing rental car next to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and it is not exactly a brand-new storyline for local law enforcement. Sky Harbor and nearby off-airport lots have figured into past investigations into vehicle thefts and unreturned rentals, a pattern authorities have tracked in earlier probes.
For broader context, Phoenix-area reporting has previously linked missing rental vehicles and organized theft rings to lots near the airport in earlier investigations. As reported by FOX 10 Phoenix, parking areas around Sky Harbor have been at the center of coordinated auto-theft investigations in recent years.
Booking, Bond And An Ongoing Homicide Probe
Mahape was booked into jail on suspicion of second-degree murder and - according to booking paperwork cited by investigators - is being held on a $1,000,000 bond. Prosecutors and the Maricopa County court system will decide whether to file formal charges and when to schedule an arraignment. Police say the homicide investigation remains active as detectives continue gathering evidence.
Neighbors in the complex say the early-morning violence shook them and they are waiting for more information from authorities. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Phoenix Police Department or call the department's non-emergency line to submit a tip.
