Authorities are investigating after human remains were discovered today in a wooded patch on the Oakland County government campus in Pontiac, just steps from the county’s main courthouse.
Deputies found the body south of the Oakland County Circuit Court building, in a wooded area on county property, and said the remains appeared to be in an advanced state of decomposition. The individual is believed to be an adult male, though officials have not yet made a positive identification.
According to MLive, deputies with the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office recovered a patient identification bracelet at the scene and secured the area while detectives processed evidence. Investigators are now working to trace that bracelet back to the medical facility listed on it, a key step in confirming who the person was and how he died.

The county Medical Examiner will examine the remains and carry out forensic testing to determine identity and cause and manner of death. The process is not quick. The Oakland County Medical Examiner’s Office notes that autopsy work and related records checks can take several weeks, with completed reports commonly taking 14 to 16 weeks to finalize, according to the Oakland County Medical Examiner's Office.
Until then, detectives are banking on a mix of forensic evidence, medical records and any leads tied to that bracelet to fill in the blanks.

The scene sits on county property just south of the Oakland County Circuit Court’s main building at 1200 N. Telegraph Road in Pontiac, part of the county’s east campus. MLive reported that deputies were called to the wooded area earlier Tuesday and that investigators have been canvassing for witnesses and surveillance footage in the surrounding campus.
The location, so close to one of the county’s central justice buildings, adds another layer of urgency and unease as investigators work to piece together what happened.
