Denver International Airport became a giant waiting room Wednesday, with nearly 800 flights delayed and 27 canceled as the airport worked through a major traffic disruption. The fallout hit the airport’s biggest carriers hardest, leaving summer travelers stuck in a slow-moving chain reaction of late departures, missed connections and rebookings.
According to KDVR, FlightAware data showed United with 269 delays and 15 cancellations, while Southwest recorded 267 delays. SkyWest had 140 delays and eight cancellations, and Frontier reported 51 delays; Delta had two cancellations.
Wind And Thunderstorms Added Pressure At DEN
The Federal Aviation Administration’s operating plan for Wednesday listed wind and thunderstorms as constraints affecting Denver, with possible traffic-management measures planned for the airport. A ground stop at DIA expired at 5 p.m., but the backlog continued to ripple through the evening as airlines worked to reposition aircraft and crews.
The FAA estimated average arrival delays at Denver between 31 and 45 minutes, while average departure delays reached about 1 hour and 18 minutes. The disruption also followed a separate thunderstorm-related ground delay Tuesday, when CBS Colorado reported that delays were expected to average 103 minutes, with some reaching 175 minutes.
