A 28-year-old Detroit man is facing 10 felony charges after prosecutors say he fired from a car at a man on the city’s east side, turning a July shooting into a court case with a GPS tether and an early-August hearing schedule. The allegations add a new chapter to a scene that initially drew police after multiple people were reported wounded outside on Whithorn Street.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy’s office says Kim Wright Jr., 28, of Detroit, is charged with assault with intent to murder, assault with intent to do great bodily harm, firing a gun in or at a building, firing from a motor vehicle, possessing a firearm and five counts of felony firearm, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office. The prosecutor’s office says the case involves a 48-year-old Detroit man, while aspects involving other potential male victims remain under investigation.
The shooting happened just after 7 p.m. last Tuesday in the 11000 block of Whithorn Street. Earlier police accounts described two men and a woman in their 30s being struck multiple times after someone in a black SUV drove past and opened fire; CBS News Detroit reported that one victim was in critical condition and the other two were in temporary serious condition. Police initially said they believed it was an isolated incident and that there was no threat to the broader public.
Bond Conditions And Next Hearings
According to ClickOnDetroit, Wright allegedly shot the 48-year-old man from his car and left the scene before he was arrested two days later. The injured man was treated at a local hospital, while Wright was arraigned Thursday and given a $75,000 bond, a GPS tether and a 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew. A bond redetermination hearing is set for Monday morning, followed by a probable cause conference Thursday morning.
