Detroit’s Father Forgive Me is having a very good summer: The East Village wine-and-cocktail bar has been named one of the best bars in the country for 2026, a little over a year after opening. The honor puts a former church garage on a national drinking map — and gives Detroit’s east side another bragging right beyond the usual downtown cocktail circuit.
The Detroit Free Press reported Wednesday that Father Forgive Me made USA Today’s 2026 best-bars lineup. The recognition arrives as the bar continues to build a following with a polished drinks program, a sprawling outdoor setting and a name that practically begs for a dramatic toast.
There is another major number attached to the Detroit bar: The World’s 50 Best Bars ranked Father Forgive Me No. 83 on its 2026 North America extended list. The organization called it a new entry and highlighted its cocktail program and abundant al fresco seating.
From church garage to east-side destination
Father Forgive Me opened in June 2025 inside the former garage of the Shepherd, a Romanesque-style church that dates to 1911 and operated until 2016. As Eater Detroit reported at the time, the bar was developed by the hospitality team behind Standby, Deluxx Fluxx and the Skip.
The bar’s rise is part of the larger Little Village campus, where art, food, hospitality and public space are being stitched together on Detroit’s east side. A recent Hoodline report noted that the Shepherd complex already includes Father Forgive Me and Warda Pâtisserie, with another restaurant project from Tony Hawk and chef George Azar in the works.
Inside, guests will find an oak bar and a softly lit room that opens onto a patio with benches, a fire pit and room to linger. Visit Detroit describes the spot as a wine-and-cocktail bar with beer, nonalcoholic drinks and small plates including marcona almonds, stuffed dates, burrata and a brie, ham and jam baguette.
What’s on the menu
The opening menu leaned into playful church references, including a twisty French pastry called a sacristan, along with mortadella on focaccia and a baguette topped with Brie, ham and jam. Eater Detroit also reported that the beverage program included rotating wines, creative cocktails and a substantial selection of nonalcoholic drinks.
For the practical details, Father Forgive Me says it is mostly a walk-in bar, with current hours from 4 to 11 p.m. on Monday through tomorrow, 4 p.m. to midnight on Friday, noon to midnight on Saturday and noon to 11 p.m. next Sunday. In other words, Detroit now has a nationally recognized bar where the patio, not the velvet rope, is doing most of the heavy lifting.
