An illegal "street takeover" in an industrial stretch east of Doral ended with three people injured and the driver on the run early Sunday, authorities said. The crash sent the victims to a nearby hospital and left deputies combing the roadway while they searched for the person behind the wheel.
According to Local 10, the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that the crash happened just after 3:30 a.m. in the 7600 block of Northwest 25th Street, just east of the Palmetto Expressway. MDSO deputies and Doral police responded, and medics transported the three victims to a nearby hospital. The release said the suspect vehicle is a black pickup truck with front-end damage, that the driver fled the scene and remains at large, and that anyone with information is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
New law raises the stakes
Florida updated its racing statute in 2024 to define a "coordinated street takeover" and to increase penalties for organizers and repeat offenders, including possible third-degree felonies and vehicle forfeiture, according to the Florida Senate. The change took effect July 1, 2024, and has been cited by prosecutors and sheriffs pursuing cases tied to organized takeovers.
Enforcement and public-safety concerns
Miami-Dade agencies have run targeted operations in recent years to break up street takeovers, warning about dangers to spectators and the potential to block emergency responders. County press releases document arrests, citations and vehicle impoundments used in past enforcement efforts as authorities try to deter similar gatherings, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office.
How to help investigators
Investigators asked anyone who witnessed the crash or who has video from the scene to contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477. Local 10's report notes that the details released so far come from the MDSO news release.
