Three men will be spending much of their futures behind bars after admitting to a violent 2024 home invasion that turned a quiet Douglaston house into a hostage scene. Acting Queens Supreme Court Justice Joanne Watters sentenced Brandon Dash and Ryan Dash to 15 years in prison, followed by five years of post-release supervision, after both pleaded guilty to kidnapping in the second degree. Their co-defendant, Oneil Thompson, received a 12-year prison term earlier in June. The Queens District Attorney’s Office announced the punishments and quoted DA Melinda Katz as saying the men "thought they could violate the tranquility of a family's home," while crediting the mother who escaped with her baby for stopping the plot from fully playing out, according to the Queens District Attorney’s Office.
How The Home Invasion Unfolded
During the chaos, the wife grabbed her baby, climbed out through a bathroom window, and called 911. NYPD officers quickly surrounded the home and deployed drones to locate the suspects, according to FOX 5 New York. Inside, several relatives, including a 72-year-old family member, were held at gunpoint, some were tied up, and the husband was struck with a hammer as the intruders ransacked the place, ABC7 New York reported. The suspects slipped out a back window in an apparent bid to get away but were picked up nearby by responding officers.
Evidence Trail And The Defendant Still Waiting To Be Sentenced
Prosecutors said evidence recovered inside the home and from a van linked the crew to the crime scene. Officers also found a hostage's backpack that held a hammer and more than $20,000 in cash, and a .45-caliber pistol loaded with nine rounds was recovered from a pantry, according to the DA’s office. Another defendant, Jone Smith, has already pleaded guilty to multiple kidnapping counts and a weapons charge and is staring down a significantly longer sentence. Smith is scheduled to return to court on Monday, July 20. Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz highlighted the sentencings both on X and in a formal press release from her office.
Why The Charges Carry So Much Time
Under New York law, kidnapping in the second degree is a Class B violent felony that can carry a prison term of up to 25 years, along with a required period of post-release supervision, legal statutes and court guidance show. That sentencing range is a big part of why prosecutors pushed for double-digit prison terms once the defendants admitted to holding hostages and using weapons during the robbery, according to the New York State Senate.
