After two months of detours, side-street shortcuts and a lot of frayed nerves, downtown Louisville drivers are about to get a limited piece of Interstate 65 back. The roughly five-mile stretch between the Watterson Expressway (I-264) and Jefferson Street is slated to reopen to traffic with reduced lanes on Aug. 1, following a closure to replace three aging overpasses. Crews have already reopened a two-mile run of southbound lanes ahead of schedule, though officials say lane drops and intermittent closures will keep popping up as the broader I-65 Central Corridor work rolls on into 2027.
What officials say about the timeline
According to The Courier-Journal, the plan is to reopen two lanes in each direction on Aug. 1 so through traffic can return, but on a diet. Local leaders say the limited relaunch is designed to reconnect drivers with downtown destinations while crews keep working on the remaining bridge jobs overhead.
Which bridges are being replaced
The current phase targets three deteriorated structures: the I-65 bridges over Kentucky Street and Brook Street, the span over a CSX rail line near Burnett Avenue at Hill Street, and the Bradley Avenue bridge close to the Kentucky Exposition Center. The project website says the first phase is about $150 million, that the new bridges are expected to last roughly 75 years, and that planned follow-up work on six additional bridges would push the overall program to around $370 million, per I-65 Central Corridor.
Partial reopening and detours
Crews have already brought two southbound lanes back online from University Boulevard to the Watterson Expressway, ahead of the original schedule. That move restored several on- and off-ramps and took a bit of pressure off the detour routes. Signed detours for through traffic are still directing drivers to I-264 and I-64 while local ramp patterns keep shifting. WDRB reported that the early southbound reopening followed the completion of work at the Bradley Avenue span.
Contract, penalties and schedule
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet awarded the phase-one contract to Kiewit Infrastructure South Co. and built in hefty financial penalties aimed at keeping the schedule on track. In its KYTC announcement, the agency said crews expect the first three bridges to be substantially complete in early 2027, even as traffic continues to use the limited lanes after the Aug. 1 reopening.
