Downtown just picked up a whole new kind of heat. Spork Island Trading Company opened this week on Penn Avenue, dropping a palm-lined, volcano-topped tiki bar into Pittsburgh’s Cultural District. The adults-only spot pairs themed cocktails and an island-inspired menu with fully committed escapism, complete with tiki huts, hidden booths and a staff-triggered eight-foot volcano.
What to expect inside
Guests first pass through an area billed as "Volcano Village," where staff can set off a dramatic eight-foot volcano in a room filled with waterfalls and winding jungle pathways, as reported by WPXI. Behind the bar, an island-forward cocktail program leans on rum and house-made syrups, while the kitchen sends out shareable, globally inspired small plates. The layout is built for an intimate, late-night feel rather than a traditional dining room setup.
Address, hours and house rules
Spork Island lists its home at 946 Penn Avenue and notes that it is currently open Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday evenings. Seating is limited, the bar is adults-only (21+) and the team says it is operating on a first-come, first-served basis instead of taking reservations, according to Spork Island Trading Company. Guests are warned to expect relatively short service windows on busy nights so staff can cycle more people through the hideaway booths and bar seats.
From a concept with local roots
The downtown tiki project comes from an idea the owners have been refining for years. In May 2024, the Pittsburgh Business Times reported that restaurateur Andy Tepper and operator Steve Zumoff were exploring a volcano-focused concept. That outlet later reported the partners secured a Downtown location after earlier plans for a South Side spot stalled, bringing the volcano idea to life on Penn Avenue.
Why downtown
The bar sits in the middle of the Cultural District and, the restaurant says, is just steps from the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, positioning it to catch both convention and theater crowds looking for late-night drinks. For a venue that leans hard into spectacle and themed cocktails, landing Downtown is a strategic move aimed at turning curious passersby into repeat regulars once the photos and word of mouth start to spread.
