An overnight police response near Old Oxford Road left a stretch of Durham roadway cordoned off Friday morning, with shell casings scattered in the street and possible bullet damage at a nearby laundromat. Authorities had not confirmed that anyone was shot or arrested.
Durham police and Durham County sheriff’s deputies responded around 2 a.m. to a call about a gunshot wound near Dearborn Drive and Old Oxford Road, according to WRAL. Investigators were still working to determine what happened.
Law enforcement vehicles blocked much of Old Oxford Road during the investigation, while crime tape surrounded Habibi Tobacco Smoke Shop. Investigators focused on the laundromat next door, where the front windows appeared to have been shattered by possible bullets.
The Old Oxford Corridor Has Seen Repeated Gunfire
Friday’s investigation came less than two months after a woman was shot near Oxford Manor off Old Oxford Road. She was taken to a hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening, and no arrests had been announced in that case, according to Hoodline’s report on the June Oxford Manor shooting.
The same Dearborn Drive and Old Oxford Road intersection was also the scene of a fatal drive-by shooting in May 2024. ABC11 reported that 20-year-old Ricky Orlando Nichols Jr. died after someone fired multiple rounds into the vehicle he was riding in.
No suspect, motive, confirmed injury or arrest had been released in the latest case in the initial reporting. Detectives are expected to continue processing the scene and reviewing evidence as Durham police and sheriff’s investigators work to piece together the overnight gunfire.
