A 21-year-old man is fighting for his life after a Tuesday morning crash on Sand Island Access Road that Honolulu police are treating as an alleged hit-and-run.
Honolulu Emergency Medical Services responded at about 6:53 a.m., performed advanced life-saving treatment at the scene, and took the driver to an emergency room, according to Hawaii News Now.
Police said an unidentified motorist turning left from a driveway struck a vehicle heading in the opposite direction, causing the 21-year-old driver to lose control and slam into a telephone pole. That other motorist took off without stopping to share information or render aid. Investigators said speed does not appear to have played a role in the crash.
Police Hunt Driver in Alleged Hit-and-Run
Honolulu police have opened a case through the Traffic Division’s Vehicular Homicide Section, according to Hawaii News Now. Investigators said it is still unknown whether drugs or alcohol were involved.

Sand Island Sees Another Serious Hit-and-Run This Year
This is not the first serious hit-and-run in the Sand Island area this year. In January, a 50-year-old bicyclist was hospitalized in serious condition after an unknown driver struck him on Sand Island Parkway and kept going, according to a 50-year-old bicyclist was hospitalized. Honolulu police said in an official release that speed did not appear to be a factor in that crash, and it was also unknown whether drugs or alcohol were involved.
