East Oahu commuters woke up to a headache on Saturday as a 16-inch water main burst before dawn, shutting down two westbound lanes of Kalanianaole Highway and cutting water service to dozens of nearby homes.
According to Hawaii News Now, the main break was reported around 3:45 a.m. near Kalanianaole Highway and Moomuku Place in the westbound direction. The Board of Water Supply said the two affected lanes would stay closed until further notice, while crews on scene work to repair the line. Drivers were warned to expect delays and use extra caution in the area.
The Board of Water Supply reports that 42 homes are affected and that customers in the area should be prepared for lower-than-normal water pressure until repairs are finished. The utility says it is working to restore service and reduce the disruption for nearby residents.

"When a main break occurs, the Board of Water Supply’s top priority is to protect public health and safety," the utility notes in its guidance, which explains that repaired sections are typically disinfected and flushed before normal service is restored. BWS also advises that water wagons may be set up for customers in the affected zone, and that anyone who sees discolored water should run their taps and then contact the utility for help.
