A quiet stretch of East Brown Road in Carlton Township turned deadly Saturday when a pickup truck left the roadway, slammed into a tree and erupted in flames, killing a 17-year-old driver and critically injuring his passenger in Barry County.
Michigan State Police said the teen, described in initial reports as a Freeport-area resident, was pronounced dead at the scene. A female passenger suffered life-threatening injuries and was flown by Aeromed to Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids. Local troopers, along with area fire and EMS crews, responded to the crash site west of Fry Road to extinguish the blaze and render aid.
Crash Details And Emergency Response
According to the Michigan State Police, the single-vehicle crash involved a pickup that veered off East Brown Road, hit a tree, and became fully engulfed in flames. The driver died at the scene, while the passenger was airlifted in critical condition to Butterworth Hospital.
Crews from the Barry County Sheriff’s Office, Freeport Fire Rescue, the Nashville Police Department and LIFE EMS assisted troopers as they worked the scene and battled the fire. Investigators have not yet determined what caused the pickup to leave the roadway, as reported by MLive.

Michigan State Police say the investigation into the fatal crash remains active. Troopers have not released any further information about what led the pickup to leave East Brown Road.
