A pre-dawn encounter on San Antonio's East Side ended in gunfire early Thursday, leaving a man dead and putting another officer-involved shooting under departmental review, police said. The shooting happened in the 800 block of Hammond Avenue, near Rigsby Avenue, and the man was pronounced dead at the scene as San Antonio Police Department investigators moved in.
According to KSAT, the confrontation began around 2:25 a.m. when a probationary officer and a field-training officer spotted a man on a bicycle and considered him suspicious, Acting Chief Jesse Salame said. The officers tried to stop him, then followed and found him in front of a home on Hammond Avenue. Salame told reporters the man pulled out a handgun as officers contacted him, and four of the five officers who ultimately responded fired at him. He was later pronounced dead at the scene.
How the department handles officer-involved shootings
The San Antonio Police Department says it follows state reporting rules when officers fire their weapons, and posts those shooting reports as part of its open-data library. According to the City's Officer-Involved Shootings page, SAPD publishes written reports and may release portions of body-worn camera video and related materials, in line with Texas law.
Those documents typically become the official play-by-play of what happened, and they are where investigators and the public look for a confirmed timeline and any formal description of next steps.
East Side context
The shooting comes against the backdrop of other recent gun violence on the East Side. KSAT reported a deadly July 5 shooting in the area that left one person dead and five others wounded.
For now, many details from Thursday morning remain unanswered. SAPD has not yet released the man's identity, a possible motive, or any indication of whether charges might be filed in connection with the shooting. Those points typically surface only after the department completes and releases its formal report.
What happens next
SAPD says its investigation into the shooting is ongoing, and the department's media office will provide updates to news outlets and the public, according to the city's police information pages. City transparency documents note that anyone with information about the incident can contact SAPD Media Services or submit tips through the department's Tip411 portal.
This story will be updated as officials release additional details.
